Re: PACC Sprint Trophy 2013

Another great night of sprint action at the Superdrome to race for the PACC sprint Trophy, donated by Anna Meares.

The events started with all 32 riders doing a Flying 200 to be seeded according to their time. For many it was a chance to have a ‘real Flying 200’ as the electronic scoreboard and timing was used, meaning times were indeed done digitally! A few PB were achieved and a cracking pace of 10.770 sec from Alex Radzikiewicz placed himself in #1 spot with TJ following by 0.14 sec to be seeded 2nd.
Points of Note was that Bree Hargrave seeded 8th (11.781)- being the 1st women to make the ‘A Grade’ in the Series to date.

D Grade – Cutts, Woodwiss, Gomer, Botrill, Young, Gregory, Thomas and Dashorst – Masters men, a few up-and-coming young sprinters and some who were getting back into racing, made up the field; good battles between the youth and Junior gearing of Thomas v the race experience and age of Young made for a good match up. Initially losing to Dahsort, Gregory made his way back into the semis through the Repercharge , to win against Botrill, and made a date for the finals with Young who had won all rounds.
The final D Grade sprint match up was a cracker of tactics, race skill and experience, both riders having all 3. Coming into the final lap, Young moved up towards the blue line, opening the door for Gregory to use his height on the boards to duck down to take and hold the lead; despite Young clawing back meters in the back straight Gregory held on for the win with a grin that said more than he could voice after not riding on the boards in over 6 months.

C-Grade: Apostolou, Yuen, Peacock, Porteous, Cane, Vlahos, Ireland and Little. A mix of Master and Juniors took to the boards, with the experience of the older stronger riders showing early against the junior gearing and skill:, however again it was through a repercharge that Little and Cane came back into the semis to win against Porteous and Vlahos respectively to meet up in the final. Little leading from the whistle, and was able to maintain it, despite Cane making a solid challenge all the way to the line. The quite achiever, Little took the win by half a wheel.

B Grade: Radzikiewicz David, Hogben, Belder, Anderson, Takos, Davies, McWhinney, Mangahas. Enter the sprint enthusiast. The skill and experience of match sprinting really came to the fore in this grade, with Mangahas, and McWhinney making it straight wins to the semis where they met and dispatched Takos and Davies. The final saw McWhinney take advantage of this kilo practise and shoot out of the holders creating a 25mtr gap to Mangahas by the back straight, Mangahas, worked steadily away and was able to claw back by the last lap and passed McWhinney at the final bend whose 750m effort had taken it all out of him. Mangahas took the win.

A Grade – enter the sprint specialists: Hargrave, Miller, Zdanowicz, Szegedi, Rendoulous, Radzikiewicz Derek, Angsuthasawit and Radzikiewicz A. In round 1 the brothers Radz took to the track and clearly had an unresolved issue about whose turn it was to ‘set the table for dinner – or something like that cos’ there was a clash of wheels in the northern bend but both skilled riders held their balance, the elder Alex taking the win. Miller having spent much of the last 18mths sprinting on a rather grassier track took the win against Szegedi; while Zdanowicz, inspired by his PB in the F200 took the win over Hargrave; Angsuthasawit’s explosive speed was too good for Rendoulous, easily winning.
Rd 2 saw Radz A. take the win over Miller, and Angsuthasawit over Zdanowicz, and while Rendoulous and Radz D (jr) got back into the semis, they were no match for their opponents Radz A, and Angsuthasawit respectively. The final was a show down between Team Sprint Junior World Champions team mates - Radzikiewicz A v Angsuthasawit.
The final match sprint was all that one would want from such an event – two quality riders, racing off in a closely fought match with only a ¼quarter of a wheel in it in the end. It was Angsuthasawit’s which got it over Radzikiewicz in a thrilling race that had everyone cheering and enjoying the night that had been.

Thanks to the volunteers Will, Graeme, Gemma, Darren, Jane, Kate, Andrew, David and Stuart for making the run as smooth as it did, to the riders who came to race – some at late notice – the fast paced night and kept the events ticking over quickly.

This is my last event as a Race Director, and it was a great one to be part of, seeing all the riders try the best and give their all in a sport we all love is what makes it worth the while. I shall miss the role of RD, but need to take a break from organising and have a bit of time just ‘turning up to race’! I hope someone in the Club is able to take on the Winter once a month race calendar, with a consistent group of 30-35 riders there is defiantly a desire for track racing to happen all year round

Thanks

Re: PACC Sprint Trophy 2013

Thanks Lee-Anne and Millo for another exciting sprint event..

Last night was again full of close racing, and some exciting moves on the boards; a highlight was the brothers' Radz showing that neither gives an inch on the track.. Well done to all of the officials and volunteers, it was a blast.

Thank you Lee-Anne, for your continued efforts in developing PACC track events - I too hope that someone can take over the reins and continue the impetus in 2014.

Re: PACC Sprint Trophy 2013

Thanks Lee-Anne and Dave for an awesome night of racing.

Mark you should have been in the car on the way home with the Radz brothers (and Dad).
